Up for auction/sale is a vintage "E for Export"
cocktail glass which was produced by Imperial Oil & Grease Company or Los
Angeles, in recognition of their having received the "E for Export"
award from John F. Kennedy. From what I understand, JFK started this program in
1962 to bolster the export expansion program.
Sad as it may be, this must have been one of the last "E
for Export" awards bestowed by President Kennedy, as the recognition date
on the glass is Nov. 7, 1963, and JFK's assassination occurred just two weeks
later (Nov. 22nd, 1963).
On the glass are a series of imperial crowns, with the crown
having been chosen by George Gerber (founder of Imperial Oil & Grease) to
represent his company. Below this are four of the "E for Export"
flags with the blue E along with the text: "E For Effort Flag, presented
by the, President of the United States, to, Imperial Oil & Grease Company,
Inc., for Excellence in Export. On the other side of the glass is the name
"Frank Nepper", and the date: November 7, 1963.
I tried to research Frank Nepper , and though I
found many references to Imperial Oil, JFK, and the E for Export campaign, I
could not find any related references for Mr. Nepper to learn; why his name is
on the glass?
The glass is in nearly perfect condition with no chips,
cracks, or damage of any sort, and only very minimal (if any) wear to the
golden decoration with the enamels being bright and bold. The rough overall measurements
are 3 1/4" tall, with a 3 5/8" rim, a 2 1/8" heavily weighted
base, and holds 9oz when filled to the brim.
I have described this piece as best I can, but to augment my
description I have provide several high resolution images of the glass from
varying angles (and with close-ups)
to
allow for a detailed review of quality, condition, and desirability.
This will be packaged with care to best ensure this rarely
found Kennedy era sign of prosperous American business and growth, arrives as
pictured and described.
