Professor of Physics in Swathmore College 1913* American Book Company New York ~ Cincinnati ~ Chicago Hardcover, 536 pp plus 6 pp publisher's advertisements A vintage physics book at the high school level that contains problems and questions at the end of chapters, and answers in the Appendix in the rear of the book. The usual topics are covered - General Properties; Motion, Velocity and Force; Energy and Work; Machines; Gasses; Sound; Heat; Electricity; etc., etc., but it is the illustrations that makes this kind of book collectible, and there are 556 of them, ranging from small text illustrations to a full page. The illustrations are both drawings/engravings and photographs. Many of them contain laboratory equipment - flasks, beakers, distillers, funnels, pumps, vacuums, pendulums, radiometer, gyroscope, and similar items. There are also zeppelins, aeroplanes, induction machines, motors, dynamo, automobile, microscope, cameras, motion picture projector, optical lamp, x-ray and more. *Book is dated by copyright (1913) although it could be later. There is a name/address in contemporary pen on the first blank endpaper along with a date (1920) but that is no indication of date of publication as there is no proof this person was the original owner. The book has occasional, sporadic marginalia (mostly in pencil) and several pages of staining, largely due to items such as a new clipping, piece of scrap paper or pressed flowers between pages for a long period of time. (That's a physics/chemistry topic that wasn't covered in old physics books like these.) You can see one example in one of the sample pictures. I don't think this seriously impacts the contents of an antique book like this. Definitely scarce. BOOK DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: Dated by copyright (1913), edition unknown. No jacket, likely as issued. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Dark blue-grey (possibly black) hardcover with title boxed in blind on front, title in gilt on spine, stamped symbol/illustration on rear board. Only nominal cover wear. Binding good but two loose pages (103-106), otherwise solid. Name/address on first blank endpaper, marginalia and staining as described above.
